Looking for a whole new way to appreciate the wonders of the animal kingdom? Check out this retrospective of Charley Harper’s stunning illustrations for Gerald Fichter’s 1967 edition of The Animal Kingdom (available in book form via this art collection).

These blew me away. There’s such richness of life in our natural world, such stunning variety and beauty (and even a bit of ridiculousness). These illustrations capture it all. I could hug them.

Remember when someone decided Pluto wasn’t a planet and people got really angry.

I’d really like an educated explanation of why Pluto should be listed as a planet again, without the use of “Because I said so”, “Because I don’t like change”, and “Because Walt Disney named a character after it”.

MLA format, minimum word count of 500, and a works cited.

The thing I don’t understand is why this upset/s so many people. It is merely a change of title, not an exile from the solar system. This is the perfect example of how people choose to blindly believe in things for irrational reasons. Like anndruyan said, people like this fear change. Perhaps even progress. I have zero tolerance for this kind of ignorance.

Scientific. Literacy.
